Correcting Gummy Smiles with Crown Lengthening

Perhaps you noticed that you have a “gummy” smile because your teeth appear to be very short. Your teeth may be the proper lengths, but they’re covered with too much gum tissue. To correct this, we may perform a dental crown lengthening procedure. This involves the excess gum being removed and reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. In some cases, the bone needs to be reshaped as well. This can be performed on one tooth to even out your gum line or to several teeth to expose a natural, broad smile.

Patients will most often be recommended this treatment is they have any of the following:

  • Tooth Decay
  • Tooth broken below the gum line
  • Insufficient tooth structure for a restoration, such as a crown or a bridge.

The Benefits of Crown Lengthening

Our team performs crown lengthening procedures to adjust the gum and bone level to expose more of your tooth so it can be restored. Sometimes gum recession causes the tooth root to become exposed, which makes your teeth look long and can make you look older than you are. This recession can be the result of a variety of causes, including periodontal disease.

Gum Grafting

Gum graft surgery and other root coverage procedures are designed to cover exposed roots, to reduce further gum recession, and to protect vulnerable roots from decay.

Regardless of which treatment option you choose, we will work closely with you to develop the perfect maintenance plan to save your teeth from harmful infections.

Ask your periodontist if any of these procedures are right for you. Call us at (973) 556-2655today!
