What Is Gum Disease?
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a condition caused by the accumulation of dental plaque and tartar (calculus) on your teeth over prolonged periods.
It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults over the age of 35 and often does not cause any pain until it is too late. Early detection and treatment are key in helping you to save your teeth.
Scaling and Root Planing Procedure
Scaling and root planing is a treatment to carefully remove the plaque and tartar from the root surfaces of your teeth, and to smooth the root of the tooth to remove toxins bacteria may leave behind. This treatment is therapeutic, not prophylactic like your regular dental cleanings.
For your comfort, a local anesthetic will usually be administered. Generally, on a case-by-case basis, scaling and root planing is used for the local delivery of the following:
- Antimicrobial irrigations
- Local delivery of antibiotics
- Oral antibiotics
Maintaining Healthy Teeth
When diagnosed and treated in its early stages, scaling and root planing may be the only therapy you need to re-establish the overall health of your gums.
But do not be confused – This is not a cure.
You will need to continue doing your part at home by keeping up with good oral hygiene practices, as well as having regular visits for periodontal maintenance therapy.
